Celebrating Passion

Friends and supporters of Tropicana Community Services recently enjoyed a rousing evening of entertainment, gifts and fantastic food in celebration of the agency’s 17th Annual Caribbean Ball. The capacity crowd of 400 also listened to an electrifying keynote address by Dr. Carl Mack, executive director of the National Society for Black Engineers (NSBE), in which he encouraged the Black community to put aside apathy and embrace the passion of the work at Tropicana.

For 30 years, Tropicana has provided youth, newcomers, people of Black and Caribbean heritage, and others in need, with opportunities and alternatives that lead to success and positive life choices. The agency offers culturally appropriate programs such as counselling, childcare, educational and employment services as well as youth development — often at no or low cost. Last year, Tropicana’s programs and services assisted more than 13,000.

Also during the gala, important awards were presented. These honours included: the President’s Award to Frances Lankin, president and CEO of United Way Toronto; the Community Builder Award to Hamlin Grange, president and co-founder of DiversiPro Inc.; and the Founder’s Award to Derrick McLennon, Tropicana’s formative president.

To cap off the evening, guests danced the night away to the sounds of MC & Company. Proceeds from the event go to Tropicana’s Capital Campaign. Event sponsors included Scotiabank Group, Honda Canada and RBC.
