Ontario’s first black MPP, Leonard Braithwaite, dies at 87. In 1963 he was elected in Etobicoke under the Liberal banner and became Ontario’s first black MPP, sitting in opposition. He was featured in this essay, originally part of the 2012 RBC Black History Month essay competition, about the contribution of Black Canadians to Canada’s diverse society.

Hockey hero Herb Carnegie is celebrated (1919-2012)

Known as the greatest hockey player who never played in the NHL, Herb Carnegie, who passed away at 92 on March 10, is being celebrated as a hero. After retiring from the game of hockey in 1953, Carnegie started the Future Aces Hockey School, one of the first hockey schools in Canada.
