Take Five

Each week Sway Magazine Editor Jon Sarpong gives you five ways to transform your down time into prime time.

With Black History Month, Family Day, and a plethora of special cultural events occurring throughout the city, I find that February seems to be one of the busiest months of the year. How does one jam pack attending all of the best events in just 28 days? Well, planning of course…and by reading Take Five.

FEATURED EVENT: Fab Five of Comedy Tour (QET: 190 Princess Blvd) Saturday, Feb 5, 7:30pm

The funniest play and comedy show of 2011 hits the Queen Elizabeth Theatre starring Jay Martin, Jean Paul, Trixx, Cedric Newman and Patrick Hay. Centred on love, sex and everything in between, “The Wife, The Lover, The One Night Stand” is sure to have audience members rolling in the aisles.

The Evolution of Gospel Music, GKM (120 Markham Rd) Friday, Feb 4 & 5, 7pm

Gospel is my absolute favourite genre of music and I’ve been anticipating this show for a very long time. Aadin Church, Karen Jules and the Toronto Mas Choir take the stage in what is sure to be one of the most powerful musical showcases of the year. If you love the divine sound, get out and see this event…Can I get a witness?!?

Caribbean Carnival in Winter, Sanderson Library (327 Bathurst Street) Feb 5, 2pm

With the storm that swept through earlier this week, I know that some of us are dreaming of sandy beaches, crystal clear water, deep blue skies and temperatures that don’t start with the word ‘negative’ in front of them. Although, we’re a few months from that yet, you can live the island lifestyle for one day with Soca, Calypso and warm family vibes through the TPL.

Natasha Waterman, Harbourfront Kuumba Festival (235 Queens Quay W) Feb 6, 2:30

The first time I heard Natasha’s voice I was absolutely spellbound. Her voice takes listeners back to a time when artists worked to understand and master their craft (and didn’t simply garner fame through weird and raunchy tabloid behaviour). Simply stated, Natasha Waterman is a musical gem and I encourage everyone to take advantage of this free (yes, I said free!) show.

Dwight Drummond, Malvern Library (30 Sewells Rd) Thursday, February 10, 10:30am

One of my favourite Toronto celebrities is Dwight Drummond. As a family man, professional and community supporter, he is the kind of person that our youth should truly take on as a role model. Dwight discusses his journey from Jane/Finch (Yup, J & F has produced some very profound individuals including yours truly…) to Toronto’s most coveted news anchor position during a discussion at the Malvern Library.
