Black History Month — Ferguson Jenkins
Canada Post has just issued a stamp to honour Ferguson Arthur Jenkins, who is in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York— the only Canadian in the Hall. He is also in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.
A pitcher, Jenkins played for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1965-66; the Chicago Cubs from 1966-1973 and 1982 to 1983; the Texas Rangers from 1974 to 1975 and 1978 to 1981 and the Boston Red Sox from 1976 to 1977. He played in his first All-Star game in 1967. During that game he struck six players including Mickey Mantle, Jim Fregosi and Rod Carew. It was one of several All-Star appearances.
The Chatham-born Jenkins led the league twice in wins and won the National League Cy Young award in 1971. He retired in 1985 with: 3,192 strikeouts, 267 complete games and 49 shutouts.
In 2007 in received the Order of Canada.
“Mental attitude and concentration are the keys to pitching,” he said.
