A reason to smile
By Erica Phillips
He may not look it, but Dr. Anthony Sterling of Sterling Dental has been practicing dentistry — and creating bright smiles around the corner and around the world — for 18 years.
Actually, Dr. Sterling has been supporting community groups since he was a teenager. But, since opening his practice in 1992, he has been able to contribute financially.
He says when he started Sterling Dental, there was very little Black representation in the medical community. “I wanted to provide the best dental services to my community,” he tells Sway, “and being a Black man enabled me to better relate to the Black population.”
A graduate of Ohio State University’s College of Dentistry, Dr. Sterling has called Brampton home for 10 years. which, by no coincidence, is where his two family-oriented offices are. The company’s slogan, “Let our family treat your family,” is a reflection of his values and approach to business. It’s a family that, to some extent, mirrors Brampton. “I have always promoted a diverse staff because I feel it is very important to be able to offer our culturally diverse population services in their own languages if possible, and also an environment in which they feel comfortable and secure,” he says.
Sterling Dental supports and sponsors a number of community events, individuals and organizations in Brampton and Toronto. Among them are the Canadian Black Caucus, The United Achievers’ Club of Brampton, and the Black Business and Professional Association Harry Jerome Awards. Meanwhile, Dr. Sterling’s work with the William Osler Health Centre (Brampton Civic Hospital) includes participation in the Cardiac Heart Walk, the annual William Osler Health Systems Foundation Gala, the Annual Hockey Challenge, Ski Day activities and more.
But Dr. Sterling is most proud of the Brampton’s Best Smile Contest, a campaign that has raised tens of thousands of dollars. “We ask participants to submit a photo of their smile through our website at sterlingdental.com, and for each smile received, we donate $1 to the Brampton Civic Hospital,” he says.
Sterling Dental has even taken its smile-inducing work international by encouraging good dental health and providing dental services in under-privileged communities, including those in the Dominican Republic and Zimbabwe.
As if that wasn’t enough, the dentist also finds time to support individuals who are striving to positively use their gifts, such as Ernest Nketiah, the Canadian champion masters’ badminton player; Nadine Williams, an author and poet; Camille Gordon, a young artist; and saxophonist Dave McLaughlin. “I support these groups and individuals because they have a strong and positive impact on the population at large, and thus are worthy of being supported,” he says. “Supporting the cultural scene encourages the community to continue circulating the benefits of this support. By giving to the community, you are really giving back to those who have supported your success in your business as well.”
