Naanafya’s jewellery line is an alternative to mainstream accessories
If you plan on wearing Gradé Del Avante jewellery any time soon, you better be wanting to make a statement. Started in summer 2010, while designer Naanafya was a wardrobe stylist unable to find accessories for editorial spreads, fashion shows and video shoots, the line can only be described as fabulous and fearless.
Sway: What inspires your line?
I draw my inspiration from anything or anyone that is thought provoking or challenges the idea of what is traditionally considered the “norm” through their individual sense of style and way of life.
Q: When did you realize your jewellery could be
a business?
I accessorized my clothing with my sample pieces and people were literally trying to rip the jewellery off of me—that’s when I knew. The transition to business owner was easy because I have always been very hands-on, and accustomed to working and networking with others.
Q: How do you create pieces that are true to you, but are still something others would want to wear?
I had to come up with three different collections in the Gardé Del Avante line in order to maintain the aesthetic integrity of my designs. Introducing the GDA collections allowed me to still maintain a signature style from a more approachable point of view, which gave it more commercial appeal.
Q: Are all your pieces handmade?
Yes, all my pieces are done exclusively by me, by hand. Therefore, I am able to ensure that each piece is perfectly crafted. The pieces from my haute couture and signature collections are exclusive and limited-edition designs, as I do not produce more than 20 of each style.
Q: How do you see yourself fitting into the fashion industry?
I hope to one day be recognized as one of the many great pioneers in alternative fashion such as those I look up to like Alexander McQueen, Viktor & Rolf and Thierry Mugler.
