New grooming business for gentlemen partners with Prostate Cancer Canada
Ajax-based Alleyne’s Grooming for Gentlemen declares October 1 to November 30th Man Up Season! During the two-month campaign, 10% of every grooming service sale will be donated to prostate cancer research.
Alleyne’s believes that the same mindset that prevents men taking care of their outward appearance keeps them out of the doctor’s office for routine prostate exams. “We believe that it is time for [men] to make choices that show that we understand and embrace the importance of taking care of ourselves as males,” says founder, Brenton Alleynes. “It is time for us to live up to the standard to being a man and to ensure that those who come behind us understand the value of being healthy and balanced in every area of life.”
The full service salon and family business is located in a quaint, historical building in Pickering Village, inspired by 19th century Englishman John Henry Cardinal Newman’s efforts to establish the presence of gentlemen in society. Alleynes is designed to accommodate the modern gentleman as well. Inside, comfortable barber chairs recline for the grand experience of a hot lather shave. Smooth jazz plays in the background with a relaxing lounge and male-inspired aesthetic area for pampering treatments like facials, pedicures, and massages.
Patrons are invited upstairs for image consultations, where they’re provided with wardrobe and accessory styling and coached on milestone transitions.
Owner Brenton Alleyne said he grew up watching his mother Brenda styling and refining her clients – most importantly his father Joseph. He watched on as his mother transformed a tall, lanky young man into a more muscular and refined one – taming his hair in the process. A groomer was born. He began barbering at 13 and opened his first barbershop by the age of 23.
Eight months ago, Brenton opened Alleynes, enlisting the help of sister and aesthetician of 14 years, Belinda Hoppler. She says the response has been “phenomenal”. “The men are delighted to be able to be pampered in a masculine environment and women are exhaling that these services are finally being consumed by the men in their lives.”
