Black-focused educational organizations across Canada

Organization: The Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on the Global Migrations of African Peoples at York University
Purpose: Proud to be part of an international network of research centres committed to overcoming injustice and inequity as a result of slavery and promoting a greater understanding of the history of slavery and its legacy. The Institute fosters debate, informs public policy and strives to resolve current social injustices.

Organization: The African Studies Program at the University of Toronto
Purpose: Provide opportunities to study African societies, cultures and histories through interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary lenses at three different levels of specialization. Students have the option to pursue a major or a minor in African Studies.

Organization: Centre for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean (CERLAC) at York University
Purpose: Latin America and the Caribbean are a living result of an amalgamation of different cultures over a period of time. Hence, CERLAC is a multidisciplinary research unit concerned with the economic development, political and social organization, and cultural contributions of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Organization: African Studies at York University
Purpose: African Studies is an interdisciplinary program that allows students to combine their interest in Africa with a proficiency in a given discipline. Its purpose is to enable students to pursue this interest through a series of courses that offer a variety of approaches to the area in a number of different disciplines.

Organization: Ontario Black History Society (OBHS)
Purpose: The Ontario Black History Society was founded in 1978 to protect and educate about the legacy left by Black people in the province. This organization provides a wealth of resources for research. It also presents audio-video lectures to schools and libraries that help pupils to get an understanding of Black heritage in Ontario.

Organization: Black Educators Association of Manitoba
Purpose: Provides learning materials, hosts cultural awareness workshops and gives ongoing support to Black Canadian students. One program in particular, the Black Youth Internship Program, offers a positive experience while encouraging Black students to stay in school.

Organization: Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia
Purpose: Opened in 1983, the African-Nova Scotian museum and library resource centre houses a number of cultural interpretations in the form of music, plays and concerts and hosts educational workshops, lectures and tours.

Organization: The Council on African Canadian Education (CACE)
Purpose: CACE is aa provincial advisory council with a mandate to provide advice and guidance to the Minister of Education with respect to the development, implementation, evaluation and funding of educational programs and services for African-Nova Scotian learners.

Organization: The Black Educators Association of Nova Scotia (BEA)
Purpose: This organization was founded in 1969 to help Black Nova Scotian communities develop strategies toward an equitable education system. It also works with the African-Canadian Service Division, the Department of Education and Culture and various community groups, parent associations and school boards. The BEA is a non-profit organization.

ACROSS CANADA
Organization: The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)
Purpose: Although it was founded in America, the NSBE has chapters across Canada. The purpose of this organization is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community. It offers its members leadership training, professional development, mentoring opportunities, career placement services and more.
