Faces of Jamaica

By Candice Bromfield

Out of Many, One People! Jamaica land we love! Jamaica land of beauty!  Almost 50 years ago, when Jamaicans envisioned “a better life” and turned their sights to foreign lands seeking opportunities for success beyond island shores, many were oblivious to what a powerful impact the tiny island would have on the rest of the world.

The name Jamaica has become synonymous with a unique brand. A brand that is so rich, it whets the appetite for many, while leaving others yearning for more. From their warmness, spirit, confidence and style, to their native tongue (Patois), mannerisms, and sunshine smile, one can almost quickly decipher that they are in some way, interacting with a “Yawdie,” as they are affectionately known.

An island rich in culture, heritage and legacy is now eagerly gearing up to celebrate its 50th independent anniversary in August 2012. A global phenomenon indeed, Jamaicans all over are using the golden anniversary to recognize not just the independence of the island but the unwavering talent of its people.

In Canada, Jamaicans have continued to embody excellence through athletics, academia, politics, music, film, entrepreneurship, radio, television and more. A truly resilient people, Jamaicans are now breaking through seemingly impossible barriers. The “Wi likkle but wi tallawah” mentality has still prevailed, as Jamaicans have exercised their relentless determination, refusing to be restrained by the boundaries of their small nation. And now, they are given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to illuminate their achievements and share them with all their fellow Canadians.

On this upcoming momentous occasion of Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of independence, Jamaicans will honour all the greatness that little island has inspired – from its national motto to its anthem – oneness, freedom, wisdom, justice, truth, respect, duty, strength and vision. So whether you have roots in Jamaica, frequently visit or simply love the beautifully diverse culture that is Jamaica, you can become a part of this milestone.
