People With Sway; Dr. Karl Kabasele
OCCUPATION: Physician, resident Medical Specialist and host of program ON CALL WITH DR. KARL, airing Mondays at 5:15 p.m.
CONTRIBUTION: A former associate medical officer of health for the public health department at the City of Toronto, Dr. Kabasele was lead physician for Toronto’s West Nile Virus program and worked on a variety of health issues, including the control of the SARS outbreak in 2003. In 2004, he joined CityNews and CP24. Since that time he has been responsible for providing medical commentary and expertise.
INSPIRATION: Becoming a doctor was an aspiration of mine from the time I was a small child, and happily I was surrounded by a supportive family, friends and educators who nurtured my dream. The idea probably came from positive role models in my life: an older cousin who was a doctor and my own pediatrician. The long, challenging road toward achieving the goal taught me a great deal about discipline, perseverance and deferring gratification.
