Designer Spotlight: Shawn Hewson of Bustle Clothing
By Isake Tom
The Style of Power.
That was the slogan for LG Fashion Week’s spring 2011 showcase which took place last month. Creative geniuses behind Bustle Clothing; Shawn Hewson and Ruth Promislow certainly brought style with a little bit of Tokyo to the catwalk. Japanese Prepster was the theme for this collection, which delivered with its fair share of well-tailored blazers and bermuda shorts paired with colourful shirt patterns. Sway caught up with Hewson-Creative Director for Bustle Clothing and Project Runway Canada judge and chatted it up about everything from his future plans for Bustle to the relevance of LG Fashion Week.
Why the Japanese Prepster theme for spring/summer 2011?
The theme came out of a recent trip I took to Japan. My team and I were already interested in Tokyo fashion and we were amazed at how the guys over there took the classic preppy look and mixed it with their own Japanese twist. Over there we saw the classic blazer made out of every material under the sun; from knit to tyvek.
What are your future plans for Bustle besides the new collection for spring 2011?
We are very busy. We have a few projects going on right now. We just designed the hotel uniforms for Hotel Le Germain Maple Leaf Square. We also designed staff uniforms at the Sony Centre for Performing Arts. At Bustle, we love how the different disciplines of design collapse.
What are the top trends for spring/summer 2011?
To tell you the truth I don’t spend too much time thinking about “trends”. As designers we sometimes tend to do the same thing as each other. At Bustle we just do what we do. For spring summer 2011 it looks like the 90’s are back in, but I still think its weird to reference fashion trends by an entire era.
How important is LG Fashion Week for the Canadian fashion industry in comparison to other fashion weeks around the world? Does LG Fashion Week have any relevance to the Canadian industry?
Fashion week has always been an important outlet for Bustle. LG Fashion Week also gives new designers an international stage. Fashion week in Toronto definitely has more of a consumer element. Also in terms of the Canadian industry, fashion has peaked corporate interest, you never know who’s going to be at the show. It could be Audi or Vespa. Presenting at LG Fashion Week puts you directly in front of these brands.
How has this year’s LG Fashion Week grown from the previous years?
Every year there’s always growth, Bustle’s been around since fashion week was at City Hall, then it outgrew City Hall. Fashion week continues to grow and showcase emerging talent. Every year the media sometimes likes to focus on who’s not showing but I think its misguided to focus on who’s not showing and instead we should always focus on the new talent. It’s always great to see new talent .
