Kanye West’s new cd cover causes quite a stir
Musician Kanye West announced on his Twitter page this week that the cover artwork for his upcoming LP My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is “banned in the USA.” West was also quoted as saying ”So Nirvana can have a naked human being on they cover but I can’t have a PAINTING of a monster with no arms and a polka dot tail and wings.”
The artwork has received mixed reviews from fans saying that the cover is irrelevant and they are more concerned with West’s musical talents. Some even claim that the cover is a representation of age-old stereotypes that hypersexualize black males.
Critics are are calling West’s latest issue a publicity stunt, a way for him to garner more attention for his upcoming album set for release on November 22, 2010. In an article published in The Los Angeles Times this week, a source from West’s label Island Def Jam stated that while West was “strongly urged” against releasing the album cover he was also “told that if he wanted to do it, the label would stand behind him.”
With a release date set for later on in the year, it seems we’ll have to wait until then to see if the image of Kanye West “chillin’ on the couch with his phoenix” will be on Wal-mart’s shelves or if Mr. West will have to put forth a new vision for his album artwork.
