Still remembering
We are all encouraged to remember the sacrifices Canadian soldiers made during World War one today, and to give thanks for our freedoms and privileges that resulted from such sacrifice.
As a cautionary tale, we must also remember the manner in which Black Canadian soldiers were greeted when they stepped up to defend their country.
When 50 Black men from Sydney, Nova Scotia volunteered their services, they were told “This is not for you fellas, this is a white mans war”, even though they were Canadian citizens like all other volunteers.
Additionally, the over 1,000 Black Canadians who bravely served their country, and fellow man, would continue to be segregated throughout the war, both on ships and in camps.
Let’s not forget how Black Canadians also helped defend Canada’s Freedom, despite the treatment they received at the hands of Canada’s Military.
And finally, let’s give our thanks to these men on this day, for their conviction and bravery, which was apparent on so many levels.
