Women with Sway — Audrey Campbell
Occupation: President of the Jamaican Canadian Association (JCA)
Contribution: Audrey Campbell does not take no for an answer. Whether she is developing a new marketing tactic for her company or raising money for the Jamaican Canadian Association, Campbell’s tenacity pushed her to a number of successes, including co-owning a restaurant and creating marketing strategies for corporations. Although the pace of Campbell’s career has slowed, her presidency at the JCA promises to be going full speed into a future crammed with potential.
Inspiration: “One of the things I noted is that Jamaica is a nation of firsts. We are the first Caribbean island to have a bobsled team, a dogsled team and a downhill skier. We have [Jamaicans as] the first Black councillor in Brampton, Ontario and the youngest deputy chief [of police] in Canada. We are a nation of firsts.”
Advice to young women:“One of the things I learned is to never let other people’s opinion of you become your opinion of yourself. Never let anybody tell you that you cannot do something. Never let somebody rain on your parade. You got to keep your head down, believe in your ideas and in yourself and keep going. Don’t be discouraged by ‘no.’ It means nothing.
