Real women, real style — Tika Simone
Occupation: host, MC + actor
Stats: Age 24, Size 16
Her style: Old school glam. I’m not afraid to try something different or new. It’s rare for a larger female to want to try some of the things I like to try.
Inspired by: Grace Jones. I’m obsessed with her and with what she represents. I love Sophia Loren and the way she just held her own. She was voluptuous in a time when it was not really embraced. I like what Rihanna wears because it just works for her. I love the leggings and how bold she is.
Her body image obstacles: I’m not the biggest fan of my arms. I would appreciate them if they were much smaller. That being said, my family has never made me feel self-conscious about my weight. I’ve always tried to stay healthy. I’m very active.
On confidence: I get my confidence from my grandmother. She taught me how to be a lady. You would never catch her out without a Chanel suit and pearls, and she never left the house without her compact. She was regal, beautiful and completely divine. I drew a lot of confidence and life lessons from her.
On changes in the fashion industry: I don’t think the industry has changed completely, but there is acknowledgment of issues like anorexia and the need for full-figured models. I appreciate that. Women come in all sizes — we have shape, curves, breasts, bums, thighs, arms and tummies. If you are a designer, you need to understand these things, especially if you are making clothes for women. It would be great to come to a place where we have full-figured women walking in fashion lines like Michael Kors and Armani.
Shopping tips: Don’t be so closed-minded. Even if you look at something and it looks bizarre, try it on. You never know. It’s all about your shape. I also like to go shopping with a polished look and my hair done so I can grasp what the whole outfit will look like when I’m ready to go out. Come correct or don’t come at all!
Secret style weapon: I always have to have earrings on, I feel naked without them. It’s my one fashion staple. I will even wear brooches as earrings. I love bold jewellery.
Loves fashion because: It can be anything you want it to be. As long as you know yourself and who you are, fashion will mould to you. That’s all that matters.
