A Plus Sized First for New York Fashion Week

Move over skinny b#@*#es!! The ‘real’ women are coming through.
New York Fashion Week organizers have announced their partnership with plus sized fashion e-tailer OneStopPlus.com to produce the event’s first ever plus sized fashion show.
Slated to take place at the Lincoln Center on September 15th, plus sized supermodel Emee-also the company’s brand ambassador- will host the red carpet ceremony alongside other notable plus sized models Toccara Jones and Lizzie Miller.
With waistlines in the US and North America steadily increasing, many are applauding the decision by New York Fashion Week and cite the event as a significant one for several reasons. For one, the e-tailer promises to have a show filled with numerous fashionable options for larger women. Also, the show could set a precedence for the future use of full figured models in the fashion industry. Progress is already underway with top designers such as Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton and Prada using fuller figured models in their fall shows this year.
Nancy Le Winter, show organizer and editorial director for OneStopPlus.com, had this to say about the event, “It’s simply about time that fashion speaks to all women.” She hailed the show as “the first time that women can look around and say ‘Oh my god I can wear that!’” “It’s fashion democracy at its best.” (time.com)
Following the success of plus sized models like Crystal Renn, the move towards hiring curvier models for campaigns and runway shows is gaining traction in the fashion world. However it’s still questionable, what impact if any the show will have on the fashion industry. For now, we can only wonder how much the fashion and plus sized worlds will continue to meet in the future.
