Queens of Caribana — Zena Avilez
ZENA AVILEZ, 31: Carnival Nationz
By Simona Siad
I play mas because: It’s a Caribbean tradition and a good chance to celebrate with friends and family.
On dressing up: It’s liberating to show off my body, but feel so comfortable and safe. When I’m in my costume I feel gorgeous and sexy. You see people of all sizes.
My beauty tip: Use a shimmering lotion and sparkles to really make your skin shine. Also, put on colourful makeup and mascara, but make sure it’s all waterproof!
My favourite memory: It’s from 2007. It was the year I was diagnosed with vitiligo and I was reluctant to expose my body. I wasn’t going to play mas, but my friends convinced me otherwise. I actually looked really good, despite my vitiligo spots.
Advice to other women: You have to love and be comfortable with yourself. At the parade, no one is looking at your body. They are looking at your confidence. They’re asking, ‘Is she having a good time?’
When I play mas I feel: Sexy.
My beautiful cousin… you are wonderful and beautiful example of the variety of riches with in the black cultures of the world…Be proud and stay beautiful.
I’m not sure that men are looking at your “confidence” when they see you in parade but as long as you are confidently jammin down…we love it.
