Carnaval de Veracruz
Sway examines how Caribbean culture and carnival is celebrated, from Trinidad to Tokyo
By Simona Siad
It may surprise you, but Mexicans love carnival as well. Mexico is home to Carnaval de Veracruz, the oldest organized carnival in South/Central America. Veracruz is the name of both the state and the large historic city that serves as Mexico City’s beach zone as well as a major port along Mexico’s eastern shore.
Carnaval de Veracruz boasts the largest temporary tent stadium in the world, erected specifically for this February event. The “Jarochos” (residents of Veracruz) are said to be some of the friendliest people in the world and are known to be quite proud of their culture.
In general, the carnival is well known for its music, including marimba bands, danzonera and comparsa as well as the distinctive dances that parallel Veracruz’s unique musical styles. The yearly pre-Lenten carnival festival in Veracruz is a nine-day party that really celebrates the region’s strong cultural ties to the Caribbean.
Sway recognizes that it did not, and could not, cover all of the amazing carnivals that exist in the Caribbean and around the world. Please comment below and tell us which global carnival is your favourite and why.
