The City of Toronto has proclaimed November 17th Internationally Educated Nurses Day. On this day the CARE Centre for Internationally Educated Nurses will celebrate 10 years of supporting nurses back into practice.

CARE will host a fundraising dinner and award ceremony honouring an Internationally Educated Nurse (IEN) of the Year at the Arcadian Court on Bay Street Thursday evening. Named for the late Caribbean-Canadian nursing leader Joan Lesmond, the inaugural IEN of the Year Award will go to Loy Asheri, a Sunnybrook Hospital nurse originally from Tanzania.

CARE for Nurses was formed in 2001 to address the growing numbers of internationally educated nurses unable to practice due to restrictive registration requirements in Ontario. Since its creation, CARE has served over 600 IENs from over 70 countries.

The 10th anniversary celebration will feature comedienne Luba Goy and Michele Landsberg withToronto Director of Equity, Diversity & Human Rights Uzma Shakir as MC.

Tickets are $150. Visit www.care4nurses.org/ for more information.

I’m so happy and proud that someone like Dr. Lesmond is still remembered for her tireless work to help women in her industry and community! It was a privilege to interview her and even more so for her, to be a part of my life.
