26 November 2010 96 views One Comment

Thando Hyman, the Principal of Canada’s only Africentric school is scheduled to return back to work after an investigation into a complaint against her been completed.

Donna Quan, deputy director of the Toronto District School Board, made the statement Thursday night at the school after an emotional meeting where more than 130 parents criticized the recent removal of popular principal Thando Hyman pending an investigation of a parental complaint.

Education director Chris Spence apologized to the gathering for not having communicated better with parents about Hyman’s sudden absence, although he could not have divulged details of the investigation because of confidentiality.

“We came, we listened, we learned — we should have been more timely with our communication,” Spence said after the meeting.

There is still no indication of when Ms. Hyman will be returning to work, however, the show of support for Ms. Hyman by parents of children who attend the school was overwhelming and should serve to help galvanize the community even further in support of this passionate community activist.

The African (Black) community in Canada needs to recognise that there are external and internal individuals and organisations who would like to see the Africentric Alternative School (“AAS”) fail. Those people can wait an eternity because it’s NEVER going to happen.

The parent who is responsible for commencing the baseless complaint against Ms. Hyman which set off a chain of events that disrupted the entire school community is encouraged to look very honestly and seriously within her conscience to question her underlying motivation.

Throughout the past two months that our principal was removed from the AAS, did that parent, as one individual, ever seriously considered how her actions would adversely affect the collective? For example, many students shed tears and were visibly shaken by Ms. Hyman’s absence; the brilliant teachers at the AAS were forced to carry on without Ms. Hyman’s guidance and this was extremely difficult for them because they have built a solid, respectful relationship with her; the vast majority of parents who are inspired by Ms. Hyman’s exceptional leadership skills, knowledge of Afrocentricity and genuine commitment were stressed out and angry about the unfolding situation; and the African community were justifiably angered that such draconian action had been taken.

And, as we all now know, a letter from Dr. Chris Spence dated Friday, November 26th confirms what many people already knew which is that the allegations are unfounded and Ms. Hyman is totally innocent. Parents, staff, students and community members are absolutely delighted that she has returned to the AAS today to resume her duties!
