Real women, real style — Youlanda Jackson
Occupation: wardrobe stylist
Stats: Age 35, Size 16
Her style: Funky and trendsetting. I don’t really follow any trends, so a lot of the things I wear get a lot of attention. I also do a lot of things that people are reluctant to do. I dress to my mood.
Inspired by: I draw a lot of inspiration from art, colour and interesting shapes. That is also what I like about fashion: It is very artful. I like statement pieces.
Her body image obstacles: I always worked with what I had. I’ve never had any problems showing my arms, my legs or my back. When I was younger, I didn’t like my feet because I have long toes! But as I got older, I realized what colour worked well on my feet and I just made it work. Now, it’s open-toe shoes galore. I love my toes!
On confidence: I realized there are some things in life you just can’t change. It doesn’t make sense to harp over it. Can I really cut off my toes? I can’t! I really love fashion and I love shoes. So to think that I’m not going to embark on a beautiful strappy sandal because of my feet, I just couldn’t do that. Plus, I have a really amazing family and friends who support my love of fashion. That gives me the confidence to try something new because I don’t have to worry about them saying anything negative to me.
Thoughts on the fashion industry: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but unfortunately the powers that be in the fashion world have decided that beautiful isn’t what the majority of women are. It’s not what the majority of Black women are. I think style is equal to individualism. Everyone’s style is different. It is unfortunate that the fashion industry is so narrow-minded on the incredible broad spectrum of beauty.
Shopping tips: Don’t try to be someone else. Stay comfortable and make sure of a proper fit. Also, don’t be afraid of colour. There is nothing worse than seeing a woman in something she is not comfortable in. Confidence is everything.
Secret style weapon: My jewellery and accessories. When I’m on set, working 12 to 15 hours a day, high fashion clothes do not always work. But if I’m dressed comfortably, I can always add great accessories. Whenever I am out, someone always stops me and comments on my glasses, my watch or my earrings. Accessories can make a plain outfit amazing.
Loves fashion because: It’s all about individualism. I love when people can express who they are in their clothing and carry it off in a confident manner. To me, that is what fashion and style truly is.
