Women With Sway — Janice Gairey

1 October 2010 276 views One Comment

Occupation: President of The Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, Ontario Chapter

Contribution: Janice Gairey stares at the ugly face of racism everyday to ensure that women of colour receive the equity that they deserve in the workplace. Herself facing racial barriers, Gairey makes it her duty to provide advice, resources and a voice for those who are unable to speak out against ill treatment.

Inspiration: “I’m six generations Canadian Black. We came through the Underground Railroad. I know what my ancestors, who were runaway slaves, had to face. I know every generation it has gotten better, but racism is alive and well. I also have to remember that I have 16 grandchildren and if I give up, they’ll want to give up too. I can’t do that to them. They’re my generation of hope.”

Advice to young women: “I have 16 grandchildren, eight of them are going to become women. It is so important for them to have post secondary education because of the competition. [With education, they have a step up in] their ability to find work suited to their skills. It’s critical. Times are changing and chances of moving up if you don’t have an education are slimmer.”
