Jamaican Canadian Association nears 50 years of service

Since 1962, the Jamaican Canadian Association (JCA) has worked diligently to advocate for and provide support to new immigrants and families facing challenges while promoting the cultural heritage of Jamaicans and African-Canadians.

With myriad issues facing these communities daily, this non-profit charitable organization has been there for almost half a century to uphold Jamaica’s motto: Out of Many, One People.

Programs like the Youth Outreach project, engage today’s youth by providing them with the tools, opportunities and skills needed to overcome challenges and thrive, now and in the future. But it’s not only youth that the JCA sees as a significant recipient of its services.

The organization also embraces seniors by recognizing their value to the community through their guidance and directives. With that in mind, the JCA created the Caribbean Canadian Seniors Club, which enables and encourages members to live active, healthy lifestyles and to advocate on issues of interest to them.

JCA President Audrey Campbell is proud of the association’s achievements and is elated about the 50th anniversary that the association will be celebrating in conjunction with Jamaica’s independence. “As we approach our 50th year,” says Campbell, “we can’t help but reflect on the road travelled and the people who have been instrumental in our success.

It is with this in mind that we embrace, with anticipation, this landmark anniversary and never fail to forget that it takes a village to raise a child, but a community to build an association.”  Through continued support and dedication of its members, the JCA continues to be active in the Jamaican, Caribbean and African-Canadian communities.

Campbell says: “Our volunteers are the engine that runs our organization. We encourage everyone to join us as we continue to build on our legacy towards a rewarding future.”   Coinciding with its 50th anniversary, JCA is working closely with the Jamaican consulate to ensure the celebration is memorable, exciting and unforgettable.
