Making a difference
BBPA Scholarship recipient takes the law into her own hands
BY: Austin Maxwell
Faustina Otchere immigrated to Canada from Ghana in 1995 at the age of 11 and spent her teen years growing up in the Jane and Finch area of Toronto.
Today, Otchere celebrates success as an Osgoode Hall Law School student and the 2008 winner of Black Business & Professional Association's (BBPA) national scholarship for black law students. The award, which is sponsored by prestigious law firm Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP (FMC) recognizes academic excellence and social awareness.
"Growing up in the Jane and Finch area, in a single-parent home, living with tremendous financial difficulties, having to work nearly full-time hours while attending high school and university, on top of substantial family obligations...all made me realize the need for accessible legal assistance and positive role models in disenfranchised communities," says Otchere. "Through my law degree, I want to ensure people there have reasonable access to legal services, regardless of their background, and that young people have the positive influences they need to help them achieve their dreams. This scholarship is helping me reach that goal. I entered law to make a difference."
