Street Style: When Tommy Met Anna at the Room http://swaymag.ca/2011/04/street-style-when-tommy-met-anna-at-the-room/ http://swaymag.ca/2011/04/street-style-when-tommy-met-anna-at-the-room/#comments Thu, 28 Apr 2011 15:45:06 +0000 KarenWelcome http://swaymag.ca/?p=12040 By Karen Welcome

The Hudson’s Bay is hosting ‘When Tommy Met Anna,’ an exhibition showcasing Tommy Ton’s photographic work’s of Vogue Japan Editor-at-Large Anna Dello Russo’s most beloved outfits.

The opening of the exhibition was followed by a cocktail party and an autograph signing the next day where fashion lovers and Dello Russo fans gathered in their sartorial best to celebrate street style and Anna Dello Russo’s fabulous fashions.

Often described as a modern day rockstar, Anna Dello Russo is a fashion force to be reckoned with. First noticed by fashion photographer Tommy Ton in D&G gold mesh on his first visit to Paris, she continued to catch Ton’s eye with her elaborate outfits and stylish, undeterred individuality. The two became more acquainted as Anna’s popularity grew on Tommy Ton’s website JakandJil.com and soon became close knit friends who share the accolades of pioneering a universal love of street style photography.

When asked why street style has gotten more popular Tommy Ton replied, “because it’s more relatable and accessible than runway. I want to celebrate the way women dress in their own way.”

Anna Dello Russo added, “It’s important to take care of this part of yourself. It’s like colouring for kids, play like a kid with the clothes [and] don’t think you don’t have talent. Every girl has the right to enjoy fashion…if you want to wear a cherry hat, why not?”

She cites her fashion icons as Carine Roitfeld and Lady Gaga, and Tommy Ton himself as her “guru,” but it is clear that the duo’s relationship is more than that of muse and photographer. Together they share captured memories and a journey that highlights them going from being self-proclaimed “nobodies” to ushering in a new breed of cool and a breath of fresh air.

Here are some of Sway’s very own street style pics from the night:

Dameion Royes, The Mad Hatter http://swaymag.ca/2011/04/the-mad-hatter/ http://swaymag.ca/2011/04/the-mad-hatter/#comments Fri, 08 Apr 2011 13:00:17 +0000 AlanVernon http://swaymag.ca/?p=11561 By Shannon Boodram

There is something not quite right about Dameion Royes, the founder and president of the Toronto-based hat chain Big It Up. During a 30-minute interview, he does not mention corporate revenue, market share or growth strategies. Instead, the 38-year-old CEO speaks intensely about Eastern philosophies, Chinese astrology and honing one’s “essence.”

It is the kind of conversation you may expect to have with a henna tattoo vendor working out of his mobile cardboard shop—not a successful 15-year business owner whose five-store franchise just had its best fourth quarter finish. He is such a gross contradiction to everything we think we know about businessmen that it begs the question: Is Dameion Royes the new corporate pacemaker or, simply, one mad hatter?

“No! Well, maybe. Figuratively, yes. But, literally, no,” Royes says. “In previous generations, it was the mercury-based dye that used to make hatters go mad. They have long stopped using that so, technically, I am not mad. But, yes, I am mad about making hats.”

According to The Canadian Encyclopaedia, 60 per cent of couples who divorce do so before their 15th anniversary so consider it a relevant point of interest that the love between Royes and hats has withstood the test of time without skipping a beat. “When I was in high school, I remember me and my friends being obsessed with hats,” he says. “I mean, think back to the icons of the time: LL Cool J, Run DMC, Michael Jackson.

Their hats were a big piece of how the rest of the world got to know them.” However, transforming his high school crush into a full-blown love connection took a number of years to set in motion. It wasn’t until age 23 that Royes assembled a Big It Up team and opened his first location inside the Humber College North Campus bookstore.

Normally, tapping into the manifestation of culture cultivation is so difficult that it is nearly impossible to time or predict. However, in 1996, the year Big It Up opened, the Urban Music Association of Canada was formed due to the genre’s rapid growth. Without warning, the T-Dot cultural legacy had officially begun to sprout and Royes, with his urban-flavoured line, became more than just a spectator.

“Amazingly, Big It Up started along with the whole T-Dot movement,” says Royes. “While artists like Kardinal and Saukrates were stirring the pot in their lane, we were doing the same in ours. We plugged into the movement when it got its legs and now we are a part of the T-Dot fabric.”

As a testament to this, you can catch a glimpse of the Spadina Avenue storefront in Kardinal’s recent video for “The Anthem” or see Big It Up’s logo on the hat K’naan chose for his 2010 World Cup promo. But underneath the snazzy name drops are impressive numbers that hold their own as well: 15 years, five stores, 30 employees and more than one-million hats sold. It may sound like it is safe to call Royes a proud entrepreneur, but even hard facts can be deceiving.

“They say pride comes before a fall. So, on one hand, I am happy about what we have accomplished, but I am still creating and understanding my essence. What we did yesterday only has so much bearing on what will come of tomorrow.”
