ON PERSONAL STYLE:
Metzti, 29: “It’s about comfort and attitude. I like to feel a certain way and when I find a piece that represents that, I’ll wear it. If I like it, I go with it. I don’t really care what anyone thinks.”
Kiwi, 28: “I’m in a transitional period right now. Moving away from a lot of dark oversized stuff. I’m getting comfortable with my body and pulling it together, cleaning it up. But I like being very quirky, not necessarily trend-driven. I like to stand out.”
Nimo, 26: “I like one-off accessories, normally scarves or shoes, like my Oxfords that I love and that can make an outfit I’d wear to work slightly different and quirky. I’m wearing four watches, including the one around my neck. I like the way timepieces look and I’ve always been drawn to them so I like wearing a lot of them.”
A FEW OF HER FAVOURITE THINGS:
Nimo: “It’s from a walking tour in Toledo, Spain, where they showed us how swords were crafted. This (pendant watch) is the one piece I could afford, and I couldn’t bring a sword home. I love the detail and how the piece pops open to a little watch. This is my keepsake and the kind of thing I could see myself passing down to my kids. I haven’t had a piece like that in a while.”
Kiwi: “I bought this old H&M sweater when Metzti and some of my best girlfriends went to New York. It was the first time we had a proper vacation together. It was an insane three days and I had the night of my life in it. I’ve been rocking it ever since and I think I need to put it away, ’cause I don’t think it’s going to last another season.”
Metzti: “My necklace, which I got on the same trip to NYC I found it in a vintage store and it’s crazy because it opens. Everyone is always really fascinated by it. I wear it every single day, no matter what I’m wearing, and it goes with everything. It’s a part of me, it’s like a good luck thing now, too, and I don’t leave home without it. Second favourite, which sounds really basic, is this black skirt you can wear with anything. It makes any outfit. And I keep re-buying it, so I must love it. It’s the $7 H&M stretchy skirt, a staple.”
Nimo: “I have the exact same skirt. I don’t know what it is about the material, but it’s almost as if you can wear it shorter or pull it up and it looks like a high-waisted skirt but the length doesn’t change. I have no idea how, but it’s a mystery material that does what you want it to.”
Kiwi: “I’ve been wearing those skirts for years as well. They’re super versatile.”
A WEALTH OF INSPIRATION:
Kiwi: “Street style blogs, like jakandjil.com, are a godsend. Sometimes, I wear the same thing over and over in the same way and then I’ll see someone, for example, tie a leopard print scarf that I’ve been wearing regularly as a top knot headband and I’m like, ‘That’s awesome, I can do that, too!’”
Nimo: “I like to wear a lot of patterns at the same time, and I get that from interior design blogs. Whether it’s theselby.com, which I love and go to almost every day, or random Tumblr pages that I find, I like to see the way people dress up their living rooms or bedrooms and see how different colours complement each other. Somehow, it translates into jackets and bags and things like that that I’m drawn to. ”
Metzti: “I don’t read blogs, but I usually get inspired by other people, a movie, a video, something I saw in a window or a friend who wore something a certain way. Things that are a little outrageous inspire me, and I think, ‘How can I make that work for me?’ It’s really personal, random and there’s a lot of media influence for sure.”
SHOP TALK:
Metzti: “I shop vintage a lot. You find things no one else is going to have, and get inspired by old things. I always love what I find. And I do a lot of easy basics from Zara, H&M and Topshop. You can find something really fast that works for you.”
Kiwi: “Right now, it’s Topshop because I’ve been obsessed with the brand since I was 16 years old. So when it opened up in Toronto, I was incredibly excited. I like to mix high street and vintage. I have these old men’s flannel shirts and there is no point in spending upwards of $60 on one when you can find a really nice vintage one for $2. Then I’ll save up my money for the big things.”
Nimo: “I like vintage for finding random, one-off things that you know 1,000 people won’t have, but it’s also nice to know when you go to Zara, H&M or Urban Outfitters, that you can find certain pieces. Vintage can be great because of the hunting element, not knowing what I can potentially find, but if time is an issue those are my go-to places.”
