That’s What She Said, The Terminator, Twitter Overload
The Marriage Terminator

I knew there had to be more to the story when I read last week that after 25 years of marriage, former California Governor/Hollywood actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and former NBC correspondent/Kennedy family member Maria Shriver had chosen to separate and were headed for divorce. Whether you were a fan of his blockbuster films that included The Terminator series and family comedy Kindergarten Cop, or followed his political career as he attained infamy with the California budget crisis and other legislative gridlocks, the one thing (I) always admired about this couple was their apparent commitment to their relationship. Maria was greatly missed when she gave up her post at NBC as a news correspondent to follow Arnold to Sacramento when he was elected.
What’s really going on with these politicians? Is there somewhere in the fine print that says that while trying to create a better everyday life for the population, they must also create a better “every night life”?
Another fairly recent scandal involving a famous politician was that of John Edwards, former U.S. Senator for North Carolina and Vice Presidential candidate in the 2004 Presidential campaign. This indiscretion turned into a media circus when it came to surface after a year of denials that he had not only had an affair with Rielle Hunter (a woman who was filming personal documentaries of his political campaign) but had also fathered a child with her. Nevermind that his wife, Elizabeth Edwards had been very public in her support of his political aspirations, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to deal with both her medical treatment along with the news of her husband’s infidelity. While many of the scorned women in these situations walk away with some redemption (usually in the form of an extremely generous divorce settlement, Elizabeth Edwards died on December 6, 2010 – the day after the news reported that her cancer had spread.

Have Twitter, Will Tweet

A recent article posted by REUTERS suggested that celebrities who have Twitter accounts may risk boring their fans by being too accessible. There is certainly a risk of eroding the mystique that goes along with being a celebrity, where fans enjoy the hunt of digging up interesting facts about them, but now have to look no further than to Twitter timeline to find out what they had for breakfast, or what music they have playing in their iPod.
I follow my fair share of celebrity accounts (and by that I mean BIG celebrities, not “on-the-block” celebrities), and I have to admit, sometimes the experience is a little lacklustre. On the one hand, I love knowing that the Ashton Kutchers and Diddy’s of the world are (like us) posed up somewhere with hand-held device in hand, updating their status at the same time as we are – for a moment, we share a common activity. But on the other hand, discovering how terrible your favourite stars spelling is can be a bit of a let-down.
