DIY Divas
Break out of your beauty rut and let the signatures of three legendary songbirds inspire your next night out. It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3!
BY: Ingrie Williams
Her beauty signature: Can’t-miss-me hair accessories and an equally stunning lip colour.
Pitch perfect if: You long to look classically feminine.
DIY:
1. Dewy skin sets the stage for oversize hairpins and a strong lip. To maintain a softly glowing complexion, apply loose or pressed translucent powder to your T-zone only and let eyes and cheeks shine on.
2. To create a precisely shaped mouth, apply a matte, creamy lipstick straight from the tube. For true staying power, blot excess using one-ply tissue, re-apply and then, holding the tissue over your mouth, set colour with translucent powder lightly dusted overtop.
3. For show-stopping hair accessories, a coat of metallic gold spraypaint puts a modern twist on a bouquet of faux flowers. Use various sizes of hairpins and make like Lady Day by piling on a face-framing sculptural cascade. The foundation of this ‘do starts with sectioning hair at the crown, curling one-inch pieces around a medium-barrel curling iron, then pinning coils in place. At the back, twist the rest of your hair into two buns, one at the mid-centre and the other just above the nape.

The Diva: Beyoncé (circa “Dangerously in Love”)
Her beauty signature: Girly flourishes and an alluring smile
Pitch perfect if: You’re feeling fun, flirty and fabulous
DIY:
1. Start a spark with shimmering eye shadow in shades of bronze. Use lighter tones on the lid, inner corner and brow bone; and concentrate darker ones at the crease, blending up and out to create a slight cat eye. Finish with black liquid liner applied all around the eyes, a little winged out at the corner for lift.
2. Pale pink or peachy-tinted gloss adds a hint of colour to the mouth. To neutralize naturally darker pigment on your lips, dab on a light coating of foundation first.
3. Playful feathered lashes guarantee serious eye contact. The pro trick to putting them on? Forget your medicine cabinet mirror. Instead, “use a handheld mirror and hold it just under your chin,” says Dee Daly, “Then, look down and place them as close to your lash line as possible.” Then bat the night away.

The Diva: Diana Ross
Her beauty signature: Come hither eyes and confidence that purrs from within
Pitch perfect if: You’re feeling Supreme-ly playful
DIY:
1. A knockout gaze begins with gold shadow blended from lid to browbone. Next, ring eyes with black powder shadow using an angled brush. Rim the inner lower lash line with pencil liner.
2. We went all out “Love Child” with mod false lashes (love the white beaded tips!), but a healthy dose of mascara will also help as a final step to frame eyes. Be sure to do the top and bottom rows. And don’t neglect your brows; this strong look demands ones that are full and dark. Fill them in with brow powder if needed.
3. Berry toned lipstick with a subtle shimmer balances out the eyes and adds colour without overpowering the rest of the face. Line lips with a creamy liner in the same tone for maximum definition.
