Women With Sway — Esther Enyolu
Occupation: Executive director of the Women’s Multicultural Resource and Counselling Centre of Durham (WMRCC)
Contribution: Esther Enyolu invested 24 years of experience to assist needy women, specifically survivors of domestic abuse. As director of the WMRCC, she has helped women, children and youth adjust to life in Canada by providing a variety of resources like counselling, mentorship and workshops. Her work has yielded several accolades, including the YWCA Durham Women of Distinction Award and the Outstanding Volunteer Achievement Award.
Inspiration: “When I see the impact of my support on women and children, it encourages me and makes me continue to do what I’m doing because I’m making a difference in so many people’s lives.”
Advice to young women: “It is a rewarding career, but it is also a difficult career. It is about supporting, it is about hearing difficult stories. They have to prepare themselves to do the job and they have to take care of themselves. A career of trauma, associated with being a service provider like a counsellor, also requires you to take a break sometimes
